Been wondering what all the fuss about GMOs is all about? To me, it's pretty plain. It's all about RoundUp (aka glyphosate). RoundUp is a chemical that is sprayed on weeds to kill them. You may have a bottle of it in your garage right now. It's also sprayed on the crops. What kind of crops? Corn, soy, cotton, alfalfa, canola, some papaya, some sweet corn, some squash and zucchini. Some of that ends up as food that we eat.
How does it work? The crops that RoundUp is sprayed on are genetically modified in a lab to survive being sprayed with the poison and live. It is only those GM crops (and more recently a handful of "superweeds") that can live when RoundUp is sprayed on it.
Here's the thing about RoundUp - it's a probable human carcinogen, as determined by the World Health Organization. Which is why in the State of California that bottle of RoundUp in your cupboard will soon be labeled as "Known to Cause Cancer."
As countries around the world recognize the harm RoundUp is causing their population and environment, I am eager to see what 2016 will bring for the United States.
