Stay Zen on Black Friday

Stay Zen on Black Friday

Don’t lose your mind this Black Friday season!

Allow this article to act as your guide to getting the deals you want this year without going crazy. We all want to save money, but we as a country need to realize the reality of Black Friday. How many of you actually have close friends that got killer deals by going to a place like Best Buy on Black Friday without losing their mind? And if they did get those deals, were they really deals they couldn’t have gotten anywhere else at any other time? Black Friday has just turned into a circus. Below you will find our Black Friday tips to keep you sane and still allow you to save some money!

Know exactly what you want.

This is very important. Start making your list of things you want now. This will also help keep you from over spending when you start seeing all the deals online. However, If you are someone who loves to shop based off deals you randomly see, instead of planning, you can start searching for deals online. Trust me, your email will be filled with deals for you to pick from, basically from everyone you’ve ever bought anything from online.

Know exactly how to get it.

Ideally, you’ll figure out a way to get the items you want this year without leaving your couch. See below on why you should avoid physical places! The best way to plan out how to get the items you want is to start searching company’s websites and also on third party sites such as Amazon. If you know exactly what you want and it’s something that multiple brands make, for example a new yoga mat, you can start googling yoga mat companies that will be offering Black Friday deals. You can even start to figure out what yoga mat you want, and make a few backup favorites in case the one you really wants sells out.

Our advice: Search out the deals you want 2-10 days prior to the sale happening. The closer the date to the sale, the more you’ll be able to find.

Pro Tip: Create a bookmark folder for all the items you want!

Hit Up Cyber Monday.

It’s huge, and it’s a great way to shop in the comfort of your own home. The best thing about Cyber Monday is, it’s usually not just Monday. Many companies still have Black Friday deals, that are either separate or combine with a cyber Monday deal. Remember, everyone wants to sell stuff, some smaller companies might even really bank on this time of year, so the deals will be there for more than one day. And while the urge to sell is great, remember that millions of people are shopping online for these deals, so don’t diddle daddle. If you know you want something, buy it before it sells out, or you’ll be bummed. Know when the sale starts and buy it as soon as you are able.

Because we live in the beautiful modern era of technology, get cozy and buy stuff form home. Eat Thanksgiving left overs and shop away! Here are a few tips to make your experience mega tranquil for both day and night.

Open some Windows – Day

Even if it’s a little nippy outside, allow some fresh air to get into your home. Breathe the crisp air of November in, or if you live in a warmer climate, just enjoy the fresh air. Home can get stuffy, we don’t even realize it sometimes, but airing out your home can be the equivalent to airing out your mind!

Let the Light in! – Day

Since its day time, open up the blinds, find a nice sunny place to sit, inside or outside, wherever the Wi-Fi will reach, and just soak up some vitamin D.

Sip on Green Tea with Honey – Day

Green Tea contains L-Theanine which is a substance that reduces irritation and stress.  Honey also reduces inflammation in the brain which often happens when you are feeling depressed or anxious.

Snack on a Bowel of Mangos – Day

I know it’s November, but if you can find an in-season mango, cut it open for a nice little snack! Mangos contain linalool, a compound known for decreasing stress.

Have a bit of Chocolate – Day & Night

A small sliver of the dark stuff can regulate the stress hormone cortisol, leaving you feeling calm.

Breathe – Day & Night

I know it seems obviously, but have you ever noticed yourself holding your breath when your waiting for something? Maybe you don’t have an issue with this, but just remember to control your breath and keep breathing! Even if you're waiting for your checkout order to go through, don't hold your breathe!

Play Calming Music – Day & Night

We all have a different opinion of what this is, could be classical, something a bit more like a jam band, or something even more alternative. If you are looking for something new, that is ultra-relaxing, try listening to White Sun. They sing mantras that have been passed down through thousands of years and each one stimulates the subconscious in different ways.

Start up the Diffuser – Day & Night

That’s right! And if you don’t have one, add it to your Black Friday shopping list because these things rock! Our recommended essential oils are Lavender, Chamomile, Rose, and Ylang Ylang! If you have all four feel free to mix them a bit, or just use what you have. Our recommended mix 2 big drops of Lavender and 1 drop of all others. And in all seriousness, if you don’t have an essential oil diffuser but you do have one or more of these essential oils, just dab a little on your wrist and under your nose so that you can still smell it and get the calming benefits.

Light Candles –  Night

Turn the lights down low and light some candles. Sitting in low light at night can reduce anxiety and other stresses. Our body knows it’s night time, so being in a bright room can sometimes throw us off. You can also add some essential oil drops to your candle if you’d like!

Turn Night Shift On – Night

For Apple users, you can turn night shift on your computer, tablet, or iPhone phone. This tints your screen to be an orange color. Studies have shown that looking at the normal color of your device late at night can make it difficult to sleep, and after a night of shopping, you’ll want to be able to get to sleep quickly and peacefully.

Bottom line, to enjoy your Black Friday experience, make your environment an enjoyable one, a relaxing one, so you can get the things you need on the cheap without losing yourself in crowds.

By now I'm sure your pretty convinced that staying away from stores and shopping from your bedroom while eating chocolate and lighting candles is looking pretty amazing!  But, just incase you're still thinking about going out shopping after thanksgiving, here are some funny reasons that may keep you shopping form your computer.

Enough said?

Want to wait in epic lines in the cold? No? Didn't think so.

Being overwhelming disappointed after a stressful day of searching for what you wanted, and walking away with nothing.

Buyer's Remorse

Buying something you didn’t actually need just because it was on sale.

People Are Crazy

-Getting pepper sprayed by a crazy person over something like a toy.

- Possibly engaging in a mental fight.

- Angry mobs.

- Did I mention that it’s just straight up dangerous? (If that wasn’t obvious yet?)

Shopper's Rage

-You, yourself, a normal person, experiences shopping rage. It’s like road rage, it bubbles out and you don’t even realize you’re doing it. You become a jerk and possibly a crazy person on the 5 o'clock news.

Bait Sales

The best brands of stuff, usually aren’t even on sale. Retailers purposefully keep a low stock of supplies. Why? Because they want to be able to advertise that the TV you want is going to be $400 instead of $1,200 because they want you to come into the store.

Nikki's Black Friday Shopping List:

These are the deals I'll be hunting for to make a great Holiday Season for myself! I've put clickable links to products where I can. If you're interested in these products make sure you look for the deals!

Organic Lavender Miracle Balm

Of course this is on my list! I use this stuff everyday on every inch of my body, so if there is an opportunity I can stock up on some for cheap, I will take it! It's always a good idea to get something nice for your skin

Monthly Unlimited Yoga

Here in Santa Barbara there are a plethora of Yoga Studios, and they are all competing for business, I'll be taking this opportunity to get a cheap version of unlimited yoga classes. Deals like this might not be directly through the yoga studio. Often times 3rd part apps such as Groupon and Living Social will have an extra savings on unlimited yoga classes in your area! I like to buy something for my mind, body, and spirit when there are killer deals going on!

Camping Gear

Even though its winter, you've got to think ahead to the summer! For myself personally I am a fan of buying gear from REI. They have great return policies and you can become a member for FREE, and earn money back on your purchase! There discounts usually range from 10-25% on camping gear, which may not seem like a high percentage, until you realize you're saving 25% on $400, that's $100 OFF!

Perhaps these types of items and services don't interest you. But, I hope you can take away some key points. First, think ahead to Spring and Summer when you're shopping for deals, the off season stuff may have the best discounts! Second, treat yourself, don't just look for the gifts you'll be giving in December to loved ones, but also think about your own welling being and desires.

Stay Zen my fellow shoppers,
